It’s official! The Guinness Book of World Records has recognized Rovio Mobile’s Angry Birds as the “Top Paid-For Application Store Game in Most Countries”. This is another milestone for this game app that existed just more than a year ago. With a projected 6.5 million paid downloads, no other video game came close. It has also been the top paid download application in 67 countries since its release.
Guinness World Records also honored Apple’s App Store, iPhone 4, and Angry Birds biggest rival, Plants vs. Zombies. The App Store holds not just one world record. First, it is the largest downloadable video game marketplace with 37,362 titles available; and second, it is the most popular downloadable application store in the world with over 6.5 billion downloads since it was released in July 2008. Apple’s iPhone 4 got a new world record that they may not be expecting at all. This device was named the fastest selling portable gaming system after 1.5 million units was sold during its first day of release. The distinction and honor that could’ve easily gone to either Sony PSP or Nintendo DS which are legitimate portable gaming devices compared to iPhone 4 that is in fact a mobile phone.
Plants vs. Zombies may have some edge over Angry Birds before. This video game got the highest grossing launch with $1 million in earnings and the fastest selling game with 300,000 downloads, both accomplished in its first nine days of release. But everything has changed after those nine days. Angry Birds still continues to dominate the gaming world each and every day; and hopefully in the coming years to follow.
